I\u2019ll share my experience, the steps to register, and the different ways you can do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>!! Updated March 2025 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different ways to complete this process in Barcelona, but I know many people who choose this option since it\u2019s usually the easiest. So if you have a friend living here, send them a quick message\u2014maybe they can help you out (and hey, a bottle of wine as a thank-you gift never hurts!). If not, don\u2019t stress\u2014many apartments allow you to register, it\u2019s just a matter of looking around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First things first: registering means officially telling Spain that you\u2019re going to live here.<\/strong> You need to do it if you\u2019ll be staying longer than 3 months\u2014whether you\u2019re an EU citizen or not. Sometimes the system only asks for an email, but most of the time it will ask for a phone number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Facebook groups you\u2019ll find people who have been living here for a while and may lend you their number if you don\u2019t know anyone locally yet. Otherwise, once you arrive in Spain you can call <strong>010<\/strong> and they\u2019ll give you an appointment for registering. They\u2019re usually super friendly, and often you\u2019ll get an appointment quicker than booking online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We booked our appointment from Argentina using <a href=\"https:\/\/seuelectronica.ajuntament.barcelona.cat\/APPS\/portaltramits\/formulari\/ptbcitaprevia\/T128\/init\/es\/PTCIU.html?fbclid=IwAR1RbWW_h8ZGz4CAT1r5v7Op5amhvPMV7YHPl9g-H3hjE9q_Jvqn5_jX9js\">this website<\/a> by clicking on <em><strong>\u201cSolicitud de una cita.\u201d<\/strong><\/em> We chose whichever office offered the closest date to our arrival. You don\u2019t need to go to the office closest to your address\u2014any office in Barcelona will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a screenshot of what you need to select under \u201cSelecci\u00f3n Telem\u00e1tica,\u201d since that section can be confusing. From what I\u2019ve heard, up to 4\u20135 people can register under the same appointment if they\u2019re family (partners and children). You don\u2019t need an appointment per person, and the process is completely free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Register Your Address (Empadronamiento) in Barcelona: The day of the appointment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Important: the person who allows you to register at their home (whether they own or rent) <strong>does not need to come with you<\/strong>. They can, but it\u2019s unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We arrived 10 minutes early, they checked our names on the list, and we were called in just a couple of minutes later. Honestly, I was more nervous about this than when we actually entered Spain. Luckily, they were very kind and checked all our documents (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><div class=\"adsense-post\">\n\t\t<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n\t\t     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n\t\t     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n\t\t     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n\t\t     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9965753266003485\"\n\t\t     data-ad-slot=\"8352202704\"><\/ins>\n\t\t<script>\n\t\t     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n\t\t<\/script><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we registered at a rented apartment (not in our name), we brought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copy of the rental contract showing the landlord\u2019s information and the tenant who allowed us to register.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latest rent payment receipt with the address and name included.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy of the ID of the person who allowed us to register (in our case, a Spanish DNI).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The authorization form for registration, filled and signed by the person giving us permission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our original IDs (no copies needed). We brought our passports (mine Italian, my partner\u2019s Argentinian).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They also asked us where we lived before Barcelona, our emails and\/or phone numbers, and our highest level of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"947\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-947x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-947x1024-1.jpg 947w, https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-947x1024-1-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-947x1024-1-768x830.jpg 768w, https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-947x1024-1-600x649.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 947px) 100vw, 947px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That was it! We walked out with the registration completed. They gave each of us two certificates (volantes de empadronamiento). These expire after 3 months, but you can request new ones by calling 010 or online with your digital certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: you can also get copies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ajuntament.barcelona.cat\/es\/canales-de-comunicacion-ciudadana\/presenciales\/quioscos-de-tramites-y-servicios\">\u201cself-service kiosks\u201d<\/a> for administrative services located in different parts of the city\u2014citizen service offices (OAC), municipal libraries, civic centers, and even some shopping centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also explained that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EU citizens need to confirm they still live in Barcelona every <strong>5 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-EU citizens must confirm every <strong>2 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s it\u2014first paperwork done! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: These certificates are often required for registering as a civil union (pareja de hecho) or applying for your NIE, so make sure you request extra copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><div class=\"adsense-post\">\n\t\t<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n\t\t     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n\t\t     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n\t\t     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n\t\t     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9965753266003485\"\n\t\t     data-ad-slot=\"8352202704\"><\/ins>\n\t\t<script>\n\t\t     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n\t\t<\/script><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other ways to Register Your Address (Empadronamiento) in Barcelona<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>**Registering at a friend\/family member\u2019s home (owner):**If your friend or family owns the property, you may need either a rental contract or the <strong>property deed<\/strong>. You\u2019ll also need the authorization form and a copy of their ID.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>**Registering at your own rented place:**If your name is on the lease, bring the original rental contract signed by all parties, a copy of the landlord\u2019s ID, your passports, and ideally a utility bill in your name. <strong>Update 2022:<\/strong> When we re-registered at our current apartment, they didn\u2019t ask for the utility bill since our lease was months old. But maybe we were lucky. It\u2019s always better to bring it just in case.<strong>Update Dec 2024:<\/strong> If you use a utility bill to prove the address, they may require proof of payment. Since most bills are paid by direct debit, you might need a bank statement showing the charge or a \u201czero debt\u201d certificate from the utility company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>**Without a rental contract (staying with the property owner):**If you don\u2019t make a rental contract, then you must bring the <strong>property deed<\/strong> along with your IDs, the owner\u2019s ID, and the authorization form signed by them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registering without a fixed address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a permanent address, you can still register in Barcelona, but first you\u2019ll need an <a href=\"https:\/\/seuelectronica.ajuntament.barcelona.cat\/oficinavirtual\/es\/tramit\/20160001216\"><strong>ICR report (Informe de Conocimiento de Residencia)<\/strong><\/a> issued by Social Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ICR is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll be registered at a municipal Social Services Center address.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The process starts the same way: request an appointment online or by phone. On that day, you must bring the ICR form filled in (one per person). If you\u2019re registering a child, the legal guardian must complete the request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to list the address where you\u2019re currently staying (Airbnb, friend\u2019s place, etc.), since that\u2019s where notifications will be sent. Bring your original passport\/ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Social Services approves, you can use the ICR to complete the registration. However, I don\u2019t recommend this route unless it\u2019s your only option since it can take a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Municipal Institute of Social Services issues the certified notifications approving the issuance of the ICR, which specify the deadline, place, and time for collecting the report. I don\u2019t have information yet on how long this process actually takes, but I\u2019ll update the blog as soon as I do \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I can tell you is that the Institute has up to three months to respond to the request. If no response is given, the application is considered rejected. For this reason, I don\u2019t recommend this option, since the waiting times are usually too long for someone arriving from Argentina eager to settle down and likely needing to start working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, you can check the status of your ICR application through the \u201cLa OAC te llama\u201d service, by filling out the form in this section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"484\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-de-2021-03-27-20-39-35-e1756480042839.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1619\" style=\"width:636px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the Institute notifies you that you can collect your ICR, as I mentioned earlier, you then have 3 months to complete your registration (empadronamiento). You\u2019ll need to book another appointment and, on that day, go with your passport ready to register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing your registered address (empadronamiento) in Barcelona<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you move, you need to update your registration. The process is similar: book an appointment and bring the same documents as the first time, depending on your housing situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t go in person, someone else can do it for you with this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcn.cat\/recursos\/tramits\/padro\/Autoritzaciodomicili_cas.pdf\">authorization form<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcn.cat\/recursos\/tramits\/padro\/Delegaciotramits_cas.pdf\">this other one<\/a>, copies of your IDs, and their own ID in original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s another scenario: you emigrated, registered (empadronaste) during your first days in Spain using your passport, and later applied for residency (<a href=\"https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/how-to-get-nie-in-spain-eu-citizen\/\">CUE<\/a> or TIE, doesn\u2019t matter). Shortly after receiving these documents, you suddenly need an updated registration certificate (volante de empadronamiento) for some procedure\u2014for example, exchanging your driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a digital certificate, you can request a copy of your \u00abvolante\u00bb online. But here\u2019s the issue: when you first registered, you did it with your passport, and the digital certificate is linked to your NIE number (the one on your <a href=\"https:\/\/veganoya.com\/blog\/how-to-get-nie-in-spain-eu-citizen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CUE<\/a> or TIE). Matching this information (\u201cMike has THIS passport and also THIS NIE, therefore she\u2019s the same person\u201d) takes a little while to update in the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same happens if you stop being a resident (with a TIE) and later become a Spanish citizen. If you want to update that detail (or any other), you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Call 010 (it takes about a month to update),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do it in person (it updates immediately),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or simply wait\u2014usually less than 3 months\u2014and the system updates automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The fastest way to make sure your information is matched correctly is to go back to the same office where you first registered (after booking an appointment) and show them your IDs to prove you\u2019re the same person. Easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOW, if you can\u2019t go and need someone else to do it for you, that\u2019s also possible! You\u2019ll need to give them this authorization form with your details and theirs, signed.
